It’s been awhile since I last participated in #SundaySupper but when I saw it was an Autumn Apple Party theme I just knew I had to try and make it work. We LOVE apples around here. In pretty much any way, shape or form.
If you’re not familiar with #SundaySupper, the idea is that we all need to take the time, even if it’s just once a week, to get back to the family dinner table and share our time with family. For generations before ours, it was a weekly tradition and it’s something that we hope to make a tradition once again in households across the globe. And how timely is it this week since this Monday is also National Family Day that encourages families to eat together!
This time I chose an Apple Crumb Streusel Pie. Sure, there are lots of apple pie recipes but this is one from my grandmother and it is SO easy and delicious. Don’t let the picture fool you…it kind of fell apart for the picture but has a subtle sweetness without being over the top.
One trick I have is to make up pie kits so that I can take advantage of prime apple season and prepare all the ingredients I need to make a delicious apple pie any time of the year. Making a kit is simple. Just prepare your apple filling just like you normally would but instead put it in a resealable gallon size bag, label and throw in the freezer! Do the same for the crumb topping and also the pie crust. You can keep them all in a larger bag so that all you have to do is grab it, let it thaw in the refrigerator for a few hours, assemble and bake. Easy peasy! This is perfect for when you need a dessert for a special occasion (or just because) and are short on time.
Here’s the recipe so you can make your own kits and pies too!
Ingredients
- 4 large apples
- ½ recipe plain pastry (use your favorite recipe or refrigerated dough if you like)
- ½ C sugar
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- ¾ C flour
- 1/3 C butter
Instructions
- Peel apples (I don’t always do this because I’m lazy sometimes—it actually tastes ok!)
- Arrange apples in pastry lined pie pan. Sprinkle with ½ C sugar mixed with cinnamon. Sift remaining ½ cup sugar with flour. Cut in butter until crumbly. Sprinkle over apples. Bake in 450° oven for 10 minutes, then at 350° for 40 minutes until golden on top.
Notes
For Kits: Prepare apples then combine sugar and cinnamon mixture with apples. Spoon into gallon size bag, seal and label. For crumb topping, combine flour, sugar and butter in medium bowl until crumbly as described. Transfer to quart size bag, seal and label. For homemade pie crust, prepare according to directions, roll into ball, flatten, transfer to quart size bag, seal and label. If desired, put all three bags in larger gallon size bag, label and freeze for up to three months.
Rolling out the dough…using two pieces of wax paper makes it SO much easier to transfer to the pie plate!
If you’re making a freezer kit, make all the “parts” as usual, transfer to resealable bags, seal, label and freeze!
Isn’t this just gorgeous? And that’s BEFORE baking! I like to cut my apples into chunks instead of slices…but could have gone a little smaller this time. Guess I was in a rush.

Freezer kits are a great idea. Welcome back to Sunday Supper!
I love the idea of pie kits. I have made pizza kits and crockpot kits before but I never thought about pie kits, it is a great idea to get ahead of the holidays. Thanks
How great to have the freezer kit so you can bake a pie in a snap. Wonderful tip and so handy. Thank you very much for sharing it.
Your pie looks delicious! What a fantastic dea to put freezer kits together for future pies

Freezer kit is brilliant, thanks!
I love the idea of the freezer kits. It would be applicable to so many things. And the pie sounds delicious.
What a great way to always have apples ready to cook!
A perfect idea to freeze the different parts of the pie. Never thought apples froze well; now I know! Wonderful pie.
Mmmm, look at that streusel. The more streusel, the better. This pie looks delish! Happy #SS!
What a great idea to prep freezer kits! Thanks for sharing!
What a genius idea w/ the freezer kits. Thank you so much for sharing!
The pie kit idea is so smart! I always forget that I should preserve fruits and veggies when they are in season to enjoy at other times of the year. I love the idea of having a pie pretty much ready to go!
yes, I love the freezer kits as well! Awesome!
I love my Pyrex pie plates and have many of them in varouis sizes – I like to pick them up for less than $1 at yard sales, junk shops or Goodwill! I am always on the lookout for small glass pie pans – about the 4-6 inch size – they are great for making a sweet individual pie for a birthday girl or boy, or to give a little taste of home cooking to our elderly neighbor who lives all alone and is over 90! Wee pie plates are hard to find, so I grab them when I see them. Glass is perfect because it make a flakier crust – just the way it conducts the heat I think – and you can see if it is nicely golden, or needs a minute more of baking! I love your product reviews, Aunt Ruthie – peeking into your kitchen inspires me every time! Happy baking!
Okay this looks amazing and the idea of freezer kits is genius.
Wow sounds quite delicious. Fantastic!!!
How cool is the idea of the freezer kit. Awesome looking pie too!
Everything is better with streusel, this looks awesome!
I love the kit idea!
Love those freezer kits! What a great idea! You can whip this out anytime you like with no fuss!
This is indeed an easy recipe and it’s look so delish! Thanks for sharing.
What a brilliant idea! I try to be organized like that, but it rarely works out. The closest I come is pre-roasting/mashing lots of pumpkin during the season, so I always have fresh pumpkin on hand for baked treats. It’s a step in the right direction, right?
Your pie looks fantastic (I’m a sucker when it comes to apple pie!). And I love the idea of having all the fixings ready to go in the freezer. Wonderful #SS post
Freezer kits! What a great way to make a quick treat!
Neat idea. Think I’ll do that with all the apples I have sitting on my kitchen table over the weekend. Pie looks great !
This is a fantastic post – I love the step by step photos for your delicious dish and making extra to store in the freezer is brilliant. That would make life so much easier when a sudden craving for this pie hits.
I love the idea of a kit. You have everything ready to go whenever you need it. Sounds like a wonderful house warming gift or a gift just because.
I feel like I’m always short on time, so your freezer kit idea is totally appealing to me! Thank you for sharing this. And your pie looks beautiful too.
I love that you added instructions for a freezer kit. I love the thick topping on your pie. A nice topping really adds so much more to a great pie.
I love your idea for the freezer kits! It makes it so easy to just pull them out and make them whenever I would need a pie.
Oh I love love love the idea of freezer kits! Especially when you want to bake something special but don’t have the energy (or time) to make a pie from start to end.
Your freezer kits are such a great idea and your pie looks fantastic!
It’s like you’re on a msision to save me time and money!
