You guys, the grocery store game in Houston has changed dramatically in the last couple of years. Several new chains have opened up and there are so many choices! Today, I want to tell you about Joe V’s Smart Shop because their stores are unlike any other I’ve been in. Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to meet Joe V (yep, for real) and got a private tour of their newest store off West Fuqua and Beltway 8 that opened a couple of days ago.
Joe V’s Smart Shop offers consistent everyday low prices that customers can count on. They are tailored to meet the needs of a very specific customer—those focused on price and saving money on their grocery budgets. I love their tagline: “It’s not a low price until it’s Joe Low.”
What’s unique about Joe V’s Smart Shop is that they offer crazy low prizes on high quality meat and farm fresh produce. It is so fresh that they receive deliveries every day and they focus on high volume items that are top sellers (i.e. products they KNOW will sell!) That means you may not find those specialty products you need for a specific recipe but if you’re looking to get a wholesome meal on the table for your family, Joe V’s Smart Shop is the place to go! When I was there we found lunchmeat, a loaf of bread, bananas and a gallon of milk all available for about $5-$6 total! A proud division of H-E-B, the majority of their products are H-E-B or Central Market store brands but they do offer brand name products as well. In their meat department, they also offer bulk packs where you can buy an average of 20 pounds of meat for anywhere from $20-$30 total! What a great way to stock up!
I’m not going to lie, when I first heard about these stores, I though the products were leftover case lots of groceries that I might see once and never again or damaged goods. This is absolutely not true. They have a team of onsite butchers that process fresh meat every day and their bakery bakes up from scratch the top 20 items purchased by customers in their store’s area (which means it may vary slightly from store to store).
Another cool thing is that their management is not only dedicated to serving the needs of its shoppers but they are dedicated to their local community too. 90% of their Partners (employees) live within a five mile radius of each store!
One thing to note: They only accept cash or debit cards which helps keep their costs low and they pass those savings directly on to the customer.
Right now, there are seven stores in the Houston area but there are plans to expand with new locations in the future. The have locations on Antoine Drive, Uvalde Road, West 43rd, W. Bellfort, Shepherd Drive and Garth Road and now their newest store on W. Fuqua. Check out their store locator for more details.
