And here is something NOT to do. After my first batch of waffles had been really successful, I decided to try my favorite muffin mix (from a box) and see how it did in the waffle maker. Big mistake. Huge. Although the waffle muffins were good tasting, they were a MESS. And the mess stuck all over my waffle maker. It is extremely difficult to clean all of those nooks and crannies, and I was sure I had ruined the finish, even though it looked fine. But next waffle batch came out clean and easy as the first one, so no worries.
Another thing I want to mention. I had called customer service to ask about the issue of seasoning the waffle maker before the first use. It says "use cooking oil", but all I had was olive oil. One of the people in the "food experimentation" division called me back in a few days (long after I had decided not to season it at all) and told me I was fine to not season it, but if it started sticking in the future, spraying on olive oil would work just fine.
Original review:
I have not had waffles in years. I don't tend to eat out much, and breakfast for me needs to be tasty AND fiber rich. Restaurant waffles certainly would do the trick taste-wise....but normally not fiber-wise. I was given an amazon gift card for my birthday and chose this waffle maker (thank you so much to the guy who put up the video about it.) I received it today, and used it this evening. I made the whole-grain recipe from the little booklet (it only comes with half a dozen recipes.) It included some whole wheat flour and some instant oats. I added a couple of tablespoons of fiber, as well as the same amount of wheat bran, for some added nutrition. I did not adjust any of the quantities of dries or fluids, just added these items into the dry mix. I used olive oil as the oil (I only ever use olive oil in baking and eating) and I did NOT season the machine, because I read that you shouldn't use olive oil for that, nor PAM spray. So I didn't really know how it would all turn out, but the picture I am posting will show you my very first waffle. It came out completely clean and easily. The remaining three turned out just the same. I should add...I wasn't sure if I would use the timer, but it is ultra convenient and simple. I preheated the machine, it took about 4 minutes, poured in a cup of my batter, flipped the thing over, pressed the time button 3 times (for three minutes) and that was it. When the timer beeped, at three minutes, the waffle was perfectly done, as were the three which followed. These waffles are SO big. My husband and I shared ONE. Then we couldn't resist having another quarter each. Some of the remaining will go in the freezer, and some will go in the fridge for breakfast tomorrow. For breakfast I will reheat the waffles in my Breville Panini Duo, which has become my "oven replacement" for reheating such things (it does a fantastic job on pancakes which have been frozen and thawed....leftover pizza...etc. Oh...did I mention....the waffles were incredible. Absolutely wonderful to eat!

It is simple - plug it in and it heats up. When it gets to the proper temperature, the indicator light shuts off. Open the waffle iron, pour in the batter, spread it out a bit, close the cover, flip it over and come back in about 4 minutes. Or look at when the steam starts to slow down, which is another way to tell when it is done. There is no temperature to set. When it reaches the right temperature, the heat and indicator light shuts off. After cooling down a bit, the heat and indicator light comes back on, and it cycles back and forth.
My only gripe is that the “timer” is useless. It has no electrical connection to the waffle maker, so it does not know the temperature, it does not know when the waffle is done, and it does not turn off the waffle maker when it is ready. You set it to the number of whole minutes (not minutes and seconds) you think the waffle might take and it counts down the minutes (no seconds in the display). It is also very hard to see the number, so we used it once and then used our microwave’s timer instead.

I was going back and forth between the Presto Flipside Belgian Waffle Maker and other flip waffle makers made by Waring Pro WWM450PCC and Cuisinart WAF-300C. I found that the Cuisinart and Waring have identical plastic parts and I wouldn't doubt if they come from the same factory. The Waring Pro and Cuisinart seemed too fiddly. I didn't like the handle on either of them but the Cuisinart was definitely the loser in the handle department...anyway I chose the Presto Flipside because it is the most compact, flip waffle maker available to me in Canada. It stores very easily in my cabinet when not in use.
The Presto Flip is easy to use and clean. The provided instructions are short and clear and contain several recipes for waffles. It takes about 3min to warm up once plugged in and there is no on/off switch so don't forget to unplug it. The waffle recipe I use (not in the manual) takes about 4min to bake in the Presto Flipside. The waffles come out crispy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside. Simply fill either side of the waffle maker with batter, close the waffle maker and then flip it over...EASY. The design of this mechanism is pure genius...no moving parts and the pivot rod appears to be made of metal. Unlike the other two that were plastic and not smooth in use. In use, the Presto Flipside is very stable, and there's no worry about it tipping over. I would definitely recommend this product to family and friends.
Here's my waffle recipe:
1-1/4 cup of cake flour
3/4tsp baking power
1/3 cup sugar
1/4 cup of butter, melted plus more for brushing the waffle maker
1 cup of milk
1 tsp of vanilla extract
1 egg, separated
melt the butter in the microwave and allow to cool slightly
separate the egg and whip the whites in a separate bowl until stiff peaks form
mix the dry ingredients in a medium sized mixing bowl
add the milk, vanilla and egg yolk to the dry ingredients and mix until combined (don't overmix)
add the melted butter to the batter all at once and stir it in immediately
gently fold in the whipped egg whites until combined but be careful not to deflate the whites too much while folding
Heat the waffle maker and do a LIGHT brushing with melted butter before adding the batter and bake for 4min.
This makes 4 delicious waffles in the Presto Flipside
Edit Feb25, 2019: This waffle maker is still going strong! I'm thinking of buying it another to keep as a spare or backup.
Edit Dec24, 2022: This waffle maker is still going strong!
Edit Oct1, 2023: The Presto is still going :). The fact that this waffle iron is still on the market in the same format, is a testament to its quality design!
