Allergy season is here and mine have finally kicked in! That means less energy as the day goes on so I didn’t quite get my Menu Plan Monday post done yesterday. But I did make a plan and go to the store so wanted to share that with you all!
This week I spent $38.90 at the grocery store. And coincidentally I heard on the Martha Stewart radio channel about at study by The Daily Meal that Houston (where I live) has the lowest food prices. Lucky me! But that is important to note because when you’re comparing your budget to mine, it’s not always apples to apples (no pun intended!)
I posted this picture on my Facebook page and Twitter yesterday and got several questions on how I did it. I should let you know that I have a lot of things already on hand or am planning to make things from scratch. Someone asked why I didn’t have any eggs. We still have about 18 left because I had bought some at the farmer’s market weekend before last and also a friend of mine brought over a whole dozen eggs from the chickens at the church where she works–very cool! I also went to Sam’s Club last week so I have apples, avocados, sugar snap peas and some nuts on hand as well that aren’t shown but we do have with our meals or for snacks. And our garden is producing some things like lettuce so we don’t need a whole lot of that right now (but I did buy some because our garden does not produce enough for all four of us for the week). We grabbed some Vietnamese sandwiches on Sunday when we were in Houston for an event so the kids took those for lunch yesterday. And they also like pesto pasta (which I make with whole grain pasta) and I add a side of fruit or veggie and sometimes some yogurt. So this week’s grocery expenditure is kind of an exception but it’s not too far off the norm of my weekly expenditure of about $50-$60 for our family of four.
This is what’s on our menu this week:
Monday: special activity–out to eat
Tuesday: Herb crusted flank steak, roasted rosemary potatoes, roasted garlic broccoli (from our garden!), garden salad
Wednesday: Greek tacos with homemade baked falafel (recipe for the actual taco combo to come soon!) and maybe homemade flatbread if I have time (otherwise I have some of our favorite purchased kind in the freezer)
Thursday: slowcooker carnita soft tacos
Friday: Hawaiian hamburgers with mango pineapple salsa on whole wheat bun (I actually am trying some store-bought mango pineapple salsa that I also bought at Sam’s Club last week, but when mangoes start showing up in the store I will try this homemade variety!)
Saturday: out to eat/leftovers
I’m hoping to make some homemade sandwich bread for lunches and homemade whole wheat tortillas for Thursdays soft tacos. If not, I’ll need to make an extra stop at the grocery store. Which I will probably do to pick up some more milk. What’s on your menu this week?
