Pack Your Bags: It’s About More Than Just Meal Planning

This drives me crazy. All these grocery bags. The greenie in me cannot get rid of them yet they are piling up and taking up way too much space. Plus we do use them for some things. Like our trash bags (yes, kitchen trash!) but I don’t need THIS many. And I think what drives me even crazier is that I have a bunch of reusable bags that I normally bring to the store. But for the last month or so I kind of got out of the habit. Occasionally they were taking out of my van to make space for hauling other cargo. But I really can’t blame that too much.

And even though I usually talk about meal planning, I think HOW we shop is also about meal planning. It goes back to thinking about not only what we’re putting in our bodies but how we get it home and where it comes from.

Last week I asked on my Facebook page how many people use reusuable bags. I was surprised by the results. Generally they were split—only about half use reusable bags and those with them often forgot to bring them into the store. So I have a couple of simple tips that have worked for me to get back into the habit—and that’s what it is, a habit.

1. Put the bags in a place that you can’t help but remember to bring them. After I’ve unloaded my groceries I hang the bags on the doorknob of the front closet nearest the front door. I have to pass it to go outside so I grab the bags on my way out.

After i've unpacked, I hang the bags on the front closet door so I can't help but remember it as I head out the door!

2. Keep the bags in your vehicle. You can’t bring them into the store if they’re not with you. I keep them all grouped together in one bag and they store neatly in the back of my van.

Keep the bags in your vehicle so they're always with you--no excuses!

3. Use notes. My philosophy is if I can write it down then it’s off my mind and I can use my mind for more important things. Sticky notes are perfect. You can put them on your purse, put them on the steering wheel, put them near the radio or even on the driver’s side window. Just choose the place that makes the most sense for you.

A sticky note on the steering wheel is an in-your-face reminder!

Or maybe on the radio area makes more sense for you.

Or even on the driver's side window--can't miss it when you're opening the door!

4. Involve your family. When my children were younger I gave them the job of helping us remember to bring the bags. As soon as we arrived at a store, they would announce ‘don’t forget the bags!’ Kids love to have something they’re responsible for and before long it had become a habit!

I hope these tips will help you form a new habit. Next up for me, to try and convince the cashiers and sackers at my local grocery store that I’m not that weird lady who brings in all the reusable bags but someone that cares about the environment I’ll be doing great. Oh, and that just because it’s big it doesn’t need to be filled to the brim (and thus, super heavy!) I have a feeling that will take a little longer than I might hope.

This is our kitchen trash bag--uses grocery bags! Yep, it's that small for a family of four. With composting and recycling, we take it out about every other day.

Best of Meal Planning Magic: Keeping It Real

{This post is part of my Best of Meal Planning Magic series while I’m on my blogging vacation–enjoy!}

Meal planning is not all about just knowing what you’ll be feeding yourself or your family. It’s about thinking about the kind of food you purchase and making the choices that are in keeping with your commitment to the health of your family and our planet. It’s not as hard as you may think and there’s lots of inspiration to help you get started (baby steps are ok!) Here are my top five favorite related posts to get you started planning with a little more thought that just getting food on the table:

Food Inc. on PBS tonight! {Keeping It Real}

Just a quick post here to let you all know that in honor of Earth Week, PBS will be airing the documentary Food, Inc., TONIGHT! Check your local listings to find out what time it will be on and plan to watch it or set your DVRs/TiVos! I found it listed as P.O.V. (Point of View) in my programming guide–just an FYI!

The folks at Food, Inc. are encouraging get togethers of a potluck with your friends and neighbors to show the film and share a meal. Too bad I didn’t know about this earlier to get something together. Enjoy!

Happy Earth Week–And a Giveway!

Happy Earth Week Y’all! Yep, Earth Day is April 22nd and there are lots of ways we can “go green” in the kitchen and with our meal planning. Really, just by planning your meals you’re already on the right track because you’re thinking about the types of food you are feeding your family and you’re (hopefully) buying less which means less waste (of both food and your dollars!)
You know how I talk about adding magic to our meal planning by thinking consciously as they relate to menu related activities and actions? One of those ways for me is to use reusable bags on my trips to the grocery store. The employees where I shop have a long way to go before they really get used it but I know they will eventually (I think they look at me as the crazy organic lady!) You see, here in Texas, going green is a bit behind other parts of the country but we’re making progress!

A couple of years ago when bringing reusable bags on our shopping trips was “new” I was on the lookout for reusable bags for my produce. I hated using all those plastic bags on EVERY trip! And I just couldn’t throw them away so they were stuffed in the bag holder in my pantry and left to multiply on their own. I wanted something that I could reuse but also needed something lightweight so that I wouldn’t be paying extra when the bags were put on the scale at checkout. And I wanted something that was not ridiculously priced (like I had seen advertised in magazines or on t.v. during “green” focused shows).

Enter these mesh bags. See how lightweight they are? Thanks Mom, for giving me the tip on these bags! I found mine at my local Dollar Tree! Yep, four bags for a dollar. And I’ve been using them with great success on my weekly grocery trips. The cashiers still sometimes give me a roll of the eye but I don’t care. I know I am helping the environment and keeping all those plastic bags out of my pantry too!

So, that’s my little tip for you. And here’s the bonus! I’ve got a fun little giveaway in honor of Earth Week this week! I’m giving away these items below: a package of mesh bags, a reusable tote bag and one of my new EcoChic reusable sandwich size bags (check out all the designs at my new online Etsy shop!)

Conscious Eating & Meal Planning

So I don’t always watch the Oprah Winfrey Show but I usually DVR it so that I can watch it when I have time or there is something/one on that I want to see.  I was a day late watching Wedesday’s episode that featured author Michael Pollan.  I’ve read all his books about how we, as Americans, should be more conscious about the foods we eat and aware of what we are buying.  The show also highlighted the documentary Food, Inc. that exposes the food industry and how the foods we are eating are actually made.

A few years ago I began doing my own research particularly as it related to the amount of high fructose corn syrup in our foods (it’s in a lot more than you think!) and the pros and cons of eating more organic foods.  I made changes for several reasons and continue to do so.  Now, while we do eat more organic foods than ever before, our diets do not consist of only organic (it’s just too expensive for our budgets right now).  But I have done the research and now feel more informed when I am shopping and can chose those foods that our family eats the most of to be healthier on many levels.

At the end of the show, they announced that Amazon.com has discounted the price of the documentary to only $9.99 through today, Friday, January 29, 2010 until midnight.  You can order a copy by clicking on the link below.  (*UPDATED on Saturday, January 30, 2010 to say it looks like it is still on sale so check the site to see if they’re still offering the discounted price!)

In any case, I urge you to start learning more about the foods we eat and how where the food we feed and prepare for our families comes from and how it is produced.  The choice is yours but you may just learn a little something along the way and want to make a change.  I hope that through my blog you find that making our own foods from scratch really isn’t that hard (if you’re organized–which I help you with!) and the benefits are great.

Let me know your thoughts!

Think It. Plan It. Make It. Eat It.

If you’ve been following my blog for awhile now you know that I talk about more than just the organizing aspect of meal planning. Why? Because it’s not just that simple. Picky eaters, busy schedules, special occasions, food allergies and more…those all require a little bit of extra planning to accommodate.

For me meal planning is more than just deciding on something to eat. It’s about being conscious of what we eat and put into our bodies. That’s where meal planning can help. Whether your desire is to start eating more fruits and vegetables, go organic or adopt a new method of meal preparation like vegetarian or gluten free, planning your meals helps you to think about what you want to eat and plan to purchase those items so that you can prepare and eat them. The benefits you’ll see may be beyond just those that are physiological–it may be good for your (peace of) mind too.

I’ve decided one goal I have this year is to incorporate more fruits and vegetables into our diet. This is always a big challenge for me because once I’ve taken the time and made the effort to find the main dish, I often don’t feel like taking the time to find a side to go with it. So this year I plan to choose more main meal dishes that already have the fruits or veggies with them or to kick up the sides a bit and make them more exciting. I was inspired by a children’s book called Eating the Alphabet, so next week we’ll be doing just that (of fruits and veggies that is) and you can too! Be sure to check back (or better yet, subscribe above to get all the updates)

So where do I come in helping YOU with your menu goals? This year I will be providing you with some of the tools and forms that I have found to be helpful in making meal planning a bit easier. So whether you’ve decided to make a change to eat differently or are happy with what you’ve got but just need to be a bit more organized about it, we can work together to get our families eating real food and together!
