Candyloupe. How can something that has candy in the name be a healthy snack? Well, I’ll admit, the colorful and fun looking sign at my local grocery store sure did catch my and my son’s attention when we were shopping there recently! Maybe you’ve heard it before: fruit is nature’s candy. Since we were taken by the notion and cantaloupe is already a favorite in our house, we decided to give it a try! As you can see, it looks a lot like regular cantaloupe when it is cut up but I’m not sure if it was because of the name, but the candyloupe really did have a slightly different, sweet taste than the cantaloupe we were used to. This fruit did not last long in our house for sure–we LOVED it!
Later on, I was struck with the idea that this could be viewed as sneaky marketing by possibly tricking kids (and moms) into thinking fruit is traditional candy (and thereby traditional candy is fruit?). But I’m choosing to view it as some really creative marketing on behalf of the store and we are fans for sure! Who says marketing of food doesn’t apply to the good-for-you stuff too? Marketing genius I’d say. What do you think? Next time you’re in your favorite grocery store, take a look around to see if they have any new marketing of the good stuff too!
