Conscious Eating & Meal Planning

So I don't always watch the Oprah Winfrey Show but I usually DVR it so that I can watch it when I have time or there is something/one on that I want to see.  I was a day late watching Wedesday's episode that featured author Michael Pollan.  I've read all his books about how we, as Americans, should be more conscious about the foods we eat and aware of what we are buying.  The show also highlighted the documentary Food, Inc. that exposes the food industry and how the foods we are eating are actually made.

A few years ago I began doing my own research particularly as it related to the amount of high fructose corn syrup in our foods (it's in a lot more than you think!) and the pros and cons of eating more organic foods.  I made changes for several reasons and continue to do so.  Now, while we do eat more organic foods than ever before, our diets do not consist of only organic (it's just too expensive for our budgets right now).  But I have done the research and now feel more informed when I am shopping and can chose those foods that our family eats the most of to be healthier on many levels.

At the end of the show, they announced that Amazon.com has discounted the price of the documentary to only $9.99 through today, Friday, January 29, 2010 until midnight.  You can order a copy by clicking on the link below.  (*UPDATED on Saturday, January 30, 2010 to say it looks like it is still on sale so check the site to see if they're still offering the discounted price!)

In any case, I urge you to start learning more about the foods we eat and how where the food we feed and prepare for our families comes from and how it is produced.  The choice is yours but you may just learn a little something along the way and want to make a change.  I hope that through my blog you find that making our own foods from scratch really isn't that hard (if you're organized--which I help you with!) and the benefits are great.

Let me know your thoughts!
