Everywhere it seems we are reading or hearing messages to get more whole grains into our diet. What exactly is a whole grain and how easy it is it to incorporate them into our diet. Two really easy ways are to switch to whole grain sandwich bread and eat more oatmeal. My kids went years before they even knew what white sandwich bread was–they just never ate anything else but 100% whole wheat bread. But what if you want more?
Whole Grains for Busy People by Lorna Sass provides just what the title says and more. Aside from the many recipe ideas it provides, what I found most helpful was the first chapter that explains WHY you should eat more whole grains (more nutrients, essential fiber, antioxidants, etc.), Sass also includes a great guide for how to identify whole grains and how to cook them–both in detail and also in a handy “Grains at a Glance” chart that also includes suggestions of where to find them.
With sections like Quick-Cooking Grains, Whole-Grain Pastas, Flatbreads, Whole-Grain Flours you’re sure to find something to suit your family’s taste and time constraints to start introducing more whole grains into your diet. This book is definitely worth checking out!
